Despite often being an afterthought or even completely ignored, lighting plays a key role in hair analysis, whether it’s for evaluating the type, colour and condition of a customer’s hair.
You should have good lighting where you are working. Here’s a brief explanation of the most important aspects:
- The amount of light (brightness) provided by your light sources:
When your lighting isn’t powerful enough, the parts of the eye that are sensitive to colours are not used enough, meaning that colours appear dark. When it’s too powerful, the retinas are saturated. In both of these cases, this can result in you making mistakes in differentiating between colours. Therefore, you need to adapt the amount of lighting to your workplace by considering the positioning and the number of light sources in the salon. Prioritise light sources which give off a high enough level of light in lumens.
2. How well the light source can accurately display hair colours:
The source’s ability to accurately display hair colours is measured on the Colour Rendering Index (CRI), which takes the form of a score between 0 and 100. The closer the score is to 100, the more the light source displays the hair’s real colour. By contrast, the closer the score is to 0, the greater the risk of making a mistake. Who has never had the experience of noticing once they have got home that the item that they have bought is not the same colour as appears in the shop. This is as a result of the shop’s lighting doesn’t have a big enough CRI. In order to help you to make your choice, more and more light-source manufacturers display this score on their packaging. Choose a score of above 85 to ensure that you have a good level of lighting.
Our advice:
Seeing better means that you also work better; examine your salon in order to work out the best conditions to get a good level of lighting (such as position, direction, adding a light source and using a mirror or satin paint in order to increase the number of reflective surfaces). If, despite this, you don’t have enough light, choose a REVOLUTION2.2i with a light ring, which will do just the trick
