An essential accessory for curly hair, a diffuser lets you dry your curls without damaging them. However, it is important that it is suitable for your needs. The type of hairdryer you use can also have a significant impact on the obtained result. For this reason, it is best to use a diffuser that is specific to the brand of hairdryer you are using and not a general purpose diffuser that fits all brands.
What are the specifications of a good hair diffuser? How do you choose a hair diffuser based on your style goals? Velecta® Paris tells you everything you need to know in this article.
WHICH HAIR DIFFUSER YOU SHOULD CHOOSE: CRITERIA TO CONSIDER
Choosing the right diffuser not only depends on your hairdryer model, it also depends on your hair type and styling goals. It is therefore essential that you know which hair diffuser to choose, so that you can take all of these parameters into account.
1. BLOW ONTO THE STRAND
The purpose of the diffuser is to slow down the air coming out of the hairdryer and to distribute it over the entire strand (unlike a nozzle, which concentrates the air flow onto a small area). By reducing the speed of the air coming out, less force is exerted on the hair and the lock is not damaged. The first criterion for a good diffuser is therefore concerned with airflow.
Tip: hold your hand over the air outlet of your hairdryer - on a cool setting, so as not to burn yourself - with and without a diffuser attached. You should notice that when the diffuser is attached 1) the speed of the air coming out is significantly slower: 2) the air is uniform over the entire surface of the diffuser. If this is the case, all is well; if not, beware: you may not have found a good quality diffuser.
2.HOW TO CHOOSE A HAIR DIFFUSER: SIZE
The second criterion is size. The wider and deeper the diffuser is, the more hair you can get inside the diffuser. Having a large diffuser means that you don't have to hold your hair the whole time you are drying it, which is particularly welcome if you have very long and/or very thick hair. For these hair types, large diffusers are much more practical to use on a daily basis than the smaller models. Conversely, a diffuser with a smaller diameter is usually ideal for drying fine, thin hair.
Remember that a larger diffuser will make your hairdryer heavier and this is more likely to affect its centre of gravity and your grip on the appliance: don't try to make it any larger than it needs to be!
3.THERMAL UNIFORMITY : AN ESSENTIAL CRITERION FOR CHOOSING THE BEST DIFFUSER FOR CURLY HAIR
Finally, it is important to choose a diffuser that dries the hair evenly and not just the ends. It is difficult to find this information in the manufacturer's notes; few of them report on the results of the appliance’s temperature distribution. Seek out brands that do offer this data. Failing that, the best way is to test the diffuser to get a feel for it.
